September 26

We used all of our senses in the KWILD outdoor classrooms this week. We had fun tasting apples, making apple pattern prints and painting our wood creations. We even took the time to "smell" something we found in the great outdoors....hmmm....what was it?  Black walnuts. They look and smell like small limes!

New additions to our Messy Materials area!

We just wanted to share some pictures of our newest play items in our "Messy Materials" area. We have purchased 24 authentic (heavy duty) milk crates and the children have been thrilled!  We expect many forts, trains, towers in our futures!

19 September 2012

We wanted to share our experience yesterday with our first messy weather. The children were all well equipped with their foul weather gear, and despite the stormy predictions we were able to have our meeting-of-the-day, a hike around all the areas of our outdoor classroom and some wonderful fun in the outdoor chalkboard, and running lawn areas!  We got sprinkled upon, but a great time was had by all. Way to go K-Wild!!

It's raining on the rooftops!
It's raining on the trees!
But when I put my rain coat on
it doesn't rain on me!
Rain, Rain. You may stay.
We'll play outside anyway!
Rain won't make us melt away.
Rain, Rain. You may stay.
We'll stomp in the puddles
and watch waters run!
Who would have thought
a rainy day could be such fun?

The rainy weather worked wonderfully into our lesson this week about our five senses. We talked about seeing it, hearing it, touching it and even tasting it. Inside we  split into 2 groups and played a game using our sense of smell, and our sense of touch. It was great fun to make discoveries using the senses only! We look forward to playing a listening game tomorrow and continuing to learning about our senses going into next week as well.

Week 2

We had a wonderful second week in the K-Wild classroom. We were blessed with A-mazing weather as fall seems to be nipping at our heels. This week we talked about friends and what it takes to be a friend. How are we all alike and how are we all different?

We learned a great song about friends and even chose a tree friend! We were introduced to our journals and spent some time in the shade of an ash tree. Ms. Theresa and Ms. Kathy were really satisfied with the progress that our "wild-things" have made. Thank you for sharing this vision with us and we look forward to many wonderful adventures! There is a fun Autumn festival this week in the hamlet of  Bluemont. It is a great family outing if you are looking for some fun in the outdoors this weekend.

September 11

Today was a beautiful September day filled with singing, climbing, reading, painting and of course....playing in the dirt pile. While we were painting rocks, one child commented that he was painting his rock "red, white and blue."  The day was just another day in the mind of a kindergartner.  However, for parents, teachers and every other American, today was a day of somber remembrance. May we continue to pray for those who have been forever changed by that day in 2001.

Week 1

We had a great first week in K-Wild! Thursday was a busy day working in our Messy Materials Area. We also used our "outdoor chalkboard" for a writing and math activity. The children have enjoyed watching the pavilion's progress and we look forward to using it in the near future. Enjoy the weekend...

The First Day

What a great first day in the K-Wild classroom. We learned about our different outdoor "classrooms" and we made a list of rules that will make each area a safe and fun place to learn. We sang "I love the Mountains" and will add a new verse each day.  We wish we had taken a video when we took the tarp off of the dirt pile. They children jumped onto the dirt like they were jumping into an ocean! I bet the "Wild Things" are sleeping well tonight!

The Sit Spot By Jack Prelutsky

When I am full of silence,
and no one else is near,
the voice I keep inside of me
is all I want to hear.
I settle in my secret place,
contented and alone,
and think no other thoughts except
the thoughts that are my own.

When I am full of silence,
I do not care to play,
to run and jump and fuss about
the way I do all day.
The pictures painted in my mind,
are all I need to see.
When I am full of silence…….
When I am truly me.
